FAQs - Laminators

Swordfish document laminators are warranted against failure or malfunction due to faulty components or workmanship for a period of two years from the date of purchase by the original consumer. Defects or failures, which have been caused by incorrect or wrongful use, regardless whether unintentional or intentional during the operation or maintenance of the device, are excluded from the warranty. There are no user-serviceable parts inside a Swordfish laminator. Unauthorized repair or attempts to service the unit will invalidate the warranty.

Swordfish document laminators have been designed to laminate only those materials outlined within the instructions*. Non-compliance with Swordfish's instructions will invalidate the warranty.

For service of the unit under warranty, please return your Swordfish office machine with proof of purchase to your dealer or contact the Swordfish customer service. In the event of returning the machine under warranty, suitable packaging must be used. Insufficient packaging resulting in damage will invalidate the warranty.

* Please note that attempting to laminate unsuitable documents such as multiple cutouts, textiles, vegetable matter, documents exceeding the maximum thickness or documents too large or small for the pouch may result in jamming. Damage caused by incorrect use or failing to follow the instructions is not covered within the warranty.

The new Swordfish 230LR Compact, 330LR Compact and SuperSlim models are jam-free. This means that you should not experience any incidences of jamming providing you follow the operating instructions.

Although Swordfish Professional Laminators are not classed as jam-free, they should not jam providing the operating instructions are followed.

Swordfish laminators are designed to suit most users and the environment in which they work in. Providing operating instructions are followed, all models suit an academic environment. For heavy usage we recommend Swordfish Professional Laminators such as the 240HD, 330HD or 450HD models.

The total thickness includes both the contents of the pouch and the pouch itself.

As a guide, standard 80gsm paper is 0.08mm thick.

The thickness of a 2x75 [150] micron pouch is approximately 0.15mm.
The thickness of a 2x125 [250] pouch is approximately 0.25mm.

Swordfish laminators have been designed to be carrier-free. This means that using a carrier may result in a poor finish or increase the risk of jamming. When using a carrier, you may have to pass the document through the laminator more than once in order to properly seal the pouch as carriers can absorb heat.

It is possible that the document is too close to the edge of the pouch to create a strong seal. For best results, allow a 2-3mm border to allow the pouch to seal correctly. If this does not solve the problem then check that you are using the correct temperature setting and try passing the document through the laminator for a second time.

Cloudiness is usually caused by either the temperature being too low, or the document being too thick. Try passing your document through the laminator one or more times. If you have a Swordfish Professional Laminator then you can raise the temperature slightly. If the problem is not resolved then consider choosing a thinner pouch, or reduce the thickness of the document you are trying to laminate.

It is likely that the temperature is set too high. Check that the temperature setting corresponds to the pouches being used and turn the machine to a lower setting if you can. Passing a clean sheet of uncoated paper through the laminator will also help to cool down the rollers.

Swordfish laminators have been designed to be carrier-free. This means that using a carrier may result in a poor finish or increase the risk of jamming.

It is possible that the rollers may have small deposits of adhesive on them from previous laminating. To clean the rollers, simply pass a plain uncoated sheet of paper through your laminator when it is still hot. Any adhesive residue should then be absorbed by the paper.

There are a number of advantages and examples of where laminating can be useful. Examples are listed below:

  • Protects from spills: sales presentation materials
  • Protects from rain: sports and outdoor activities
  • Protects from grease and chemicals: maintenance check-lists
  • Protects from smudges & fingerprints: menus
  • Protects from abrasion: instructional materials
  • Protects from the sun: outdoor directional signs
  • Protects from creases and wrinkles: sales promotion material

There are no user serviceable parts inside a Swordfish laminator. If the laminator is still within the 2 year warranty period then opening the laminator will void the warranty. It may be possible to repair products outside the warranty period at cost.

If you have any further queries then please contact us for more details.

It is normal for new laminators to have a slight smell during the first use. This is simply from the new element and should fade with subsequent uses. If you experience a consistent smell or smoking from your laminator then please check that you have not set the temperature too high. Under normal use a laminator will produce a slight smell when the pouch is inserted but this is simply the polyethylene which is not harmful to your health.

Cold laminating uses pressure sensitive adhesives to bind the film to the material being laminated. As a result, cold lamination requires specially designed laminating pouches containing sticky adhesive which do not require heat. Cold lamination is your best option when laminating heat-sensitive documents or photos. All Swordfish laminating pouches have cold and hot lamination settings to provide maximum flexibility.

Swordfish laminators either have 2 or 4 rollers. The first set of rollers are hot and seal the pouch. The second set of rollers are designed to produce a more professional and higher quality finish.

We strongly advise against laminating multiple cut-outs inside one pouch. Attempting to laminate more than one document in a pouch is likely to result in jamming. Instead, purchase smaller pouches and laminate each document individually.

YES! Never attempt to laminate the following items, as they are likely to damage your laminator or result in jamming. As a general rule, laminators are designed for documents so laminating anything other than a sheet of paper or thin card will greatly increase the risk of jamming.

  • Leaves, flowers or vegetable matter

  • Cut-outs i.e several small pictures in one pouch

  • An item that is too small for the pouch and leaves more than a 2-3mm border

  • Newspaper

  • Thermal paper

All laminating pouches have a thickness measured in microns. Laminating pouches enclose the document between 2 sheets and as a result the thickness can be expressed in two ways. For example, pouches can be descibed as being 2x75 microns thick or 150 microns thick which simply means that 2 sheets of 75 microns are sealed together to make a total of 150 microns.

Swordfish laminating pouches have purple icons to indicate the thickness of the pouches. The thickness of the pouch must correspond to temperature setting on the laminator as shown below:

The micron thicknesses and maximum pouch sizes are listed for each laminator below:

SuperSlim 2x75 [150] or 2x125 [250] micron pouches only. Maximum A4 size.

230LR & 230LR Compact 2x75 [150] or 2x125 [250] micron pouches only. Maximum A4 size.

330LR & 330LR Compact 2x75 [150] or 2x125 [250]) micron pouches only. Maximum A4 size.

330LR+ 2x75 [150] or 2x125 [250] micron pouches only. Maximum A4 size.

240HD from 2x75 [150] up to 2x250 [500] micron pouches only. Maximum A4 size.

330HD ffrom 2x75 [150] up to 2x250 [500] micron pouches only. Maximum A3 size.

450HD from 2x75 [150] up to 2x250 [500] micron pouches only. Maximum A2 size.

We recommend using Swordfish laminating pouches as they are of the highest quality. Using cheaper low quality pouches can cause jamming or produce a poor finish.

For Swordfish Office Laminators, you can use pouches of either 150 (2x75) or 250 (2x125) microns thick. For Swordfish Professional Laminators, you can use pouches up to 500 (2x250) microns thick. You must use specially designed pouches for cold lamination.

If the pouch is jammed inside and is no longer visible from the front or back of the laminator then you will not be able to remove it. Attempting to remove the pouch through tampering with the laminator will void the warranty.

If part of the pouch is visible from the back or front of the laminator then you may be able to remove it by following the instructions below:

Using the reverse function on the 330LR, 330LR+ and 450HD

  • Turn the temperature to the ‘cold lamination' setting

  • Switch the laminator from Fwd to Rev

  • If the pouch is not badly jammed then it will emerge from the front of the laminator

Using the jam release 240HD and 330HD

  • Turn the temperature to the ‘cold lamination' setting

  • Using one hand, push and hold down the jam release lever

  • With your other hand, pull the pouch from the back or front of the laminator

The 230LR does not have a reverse or jam release function. If the above instructions do not remove the pouch then we advise you to take your laminator back to where you purchased it. Please note that jamming caused by misuse or failing to following the operating instructions is not covered by the warranty.
